Testosterone is a primary male sex hormone. To make it easier to understand: it is a substance produced by our bodies responsible for development our reproductive organs, sexual characteristic and growth. Basically it makes us look and feel like a man.
This hormone is essential for general health and well being. It turn us into a man. These effects are called androgenic:
- deepening the voice
- facial and body hair growth
- enlargement of testicles and penis
- sperm production
It plays a key role in bodybuilding because of it’s anabolic effects:
- muscle mass growth
- strength increase
- bones density raise
- stimulation of general growth
- rib cage expansion
- shoulders width increase
Testosterone makes us feel more confident, more aggressive. It improves our performance as an athletes, increases the metabolism and accelerates burning the fat.
Our bodies start to produce it between 12-16 years of age, when we go through puberty. It reaches the peak in around 30s and then slowly starts to drop. We can increase the production of testosterone by lifting weights in a short, intense workouts, following the training principles. Too long or too heavy sessions, without enough rest can work opposite – decrease the level of this hormone – make us feel weak, tired and hold back our muscle growth.
Testosterone occurs also as an anabolic steroid – synthetic version of this hormone – usually in a form of an injections. It is considered as a doping in most of sports and can cause an unwanted side effects like gynecomastia (terrifying growth of man boobs), decreased size of balls, acne, hair loss, depression and many more…
If you lead the healthy lifestyle, eat proper and the most important – lift weights – you can stimulate your body to produce testosterone for many, many years. You’ll be in a better mood, full of energy and confidence. Even as an old man you’ll look still muscular, strong and feel much better than any overweight teenager.
