They have many health benefits and only few disadvantages. There are also few myths related to eggs. Similar to milk, modern farming can cause this type food to be unhealthy however with this case we have a choice to get a healthier version – free range eggs.
There are few kinds of bird’s eggs:
- Pheasant, etc.
However we’ll be talking about chicken eggs because these are the most often consumed by humans.
Eggs are packed with loads of nutrients extremely beneficial in bodybuilding and general well-being. They contain:
Eggs have no carbohydrates which make them an excellent product for bodybuilders training for definition or any other athletes trying to lose fat. The less carbs we eat the more fat we burn.
Benefits of eggs
There are plenty advantages of chicken eggs. The most important one is that egg protein is absorbed by our body in nearly 100%. Their biological value (BV) is 100 where meat is only 80 and vegetable protein around 40-60. That single fact makes eggs an excellent source of complete protein for our muscles.
Besides, eggs are cheap and have long expiry date. They are very easy to prepare and we know many ways of eating them. We can consume them:
- Hard boiled,
- Soft boiled,
- As an omlette,
- And Raw.
Each version is very easy and fast to make. Maximum cooking time for most of those meals is no more than 10 minutes.
Eggs contain loads of important micronutrients. Vitamins A, B, D, E, Choline and minerals like: Iron, Calcium, Phosphorus and Potassium. They are also a source of coenzyme Q10.
Problems with eggs
The only problem with eggs is caused by modern farming. Similar like cows, chickens are fed with antibiotics to prevent them from being sick and steroids, growth hormone and who knows what other chemicals to make them grow bigger and faster. Most of these birds are kept in tiny cages, so small that they can’t turn around during their whole life; they never see the daylight and their becks are cut off so chickens wouldn’t kill one another.
Again, I am not sure if eating eggs form chickens raised this way is harmful for us or can cause health issues but I myself choose free range eggs which are produced in far better conditions (hens running free and also outside) or buy them from the local farmers.
Eggs myth – Cholesterol
The most common myth related to eggs is that they raise cholesterol and therefore can cause heart disease.
So to cut the long story short:
- Dietary cholesterol doesn’t affect blood’s cholesterol level too much. Good example are people on a paleo diet – rich in this substance. No heart issues with them.
- Eggs contain choline which helps to deal with fat inside our veins.
- We need cholesterol to function properly.
Some people like to separate yolk form the white and eat whites only to cut back on calories or some other reason however I find it silly. Yolk contains half of egg protein and most of its nutrients so basically it’s a waste; unless you are a professional bodybuilder and have to count nearly every single calorie.
Chicken eggs are probably one of the best type of food bodybuilder can get. They are great to build muscle and very helpful in burning fat. Many bodybuilding supplements are made from eggs. They are natural, cheap, easy to make, stay long fresh and are packed with many nutrients. Always try to buy free range eggs or get them from the local farmers – they will taste better and be probably far healthier than the other ones.
